Originally spreading as a comment people would spam just for the fun of it, This is Bob was widely considered annoying by the YouTube community. People would often create edits of the This is Bob copypasta, usually in protest of the spam. Although this would backfire as the protests were in of themselves spam. The copypasta would thistle out over 2011-2012 but would later see a return in popularity in 2013, this time used to protest the integration of Google+ into YouTube.
